A double homicide investigation is underway near Lake Morton, according to the Lakeland Police Department.
Police say they are currently searching the area near Lake Morton between Mississippi Avenue and Orange Park Avenue for witnesses and evidence related to the case.
"The neighborhood is stable now and it is safe we’ll continue to work this throughout the evening and throughout the days to come until we identify a suspect," said Lakeland Police Chief Ruben Garcia.
Police said they were called to the 100 block of Lake Morton for a suspicious incident around 5:30 pm Tuesday. Investigators said there are two adult victims dead. Garcia confirmed preliminarily, it appears to be a double homicide, though police are very early in their investigation.
At this time, no other details have been released about the homicide investigation, including the identities of the two dead victims.
Police do believe, however, that the local neighborhood is not in danger.
"First of all it’s a tragedy for any of our neighborhoods to have a crime to occur particularly a violent crime so we will have some time in this neighborhood as we would in any neighborhood they’ll have to re-heal from having an incident in their neighborhood that breaks up the peace and tranquility of their neighborhood," said Garcia.
